VAN GOGH'S BRITAIN & THE GREEN FAIRY

VAN GOGH'S BRITAIN & THE GREEN FAIRY

Wed 03 Apr 19:00 - 21:00

LOCKER ROOM

Explore these themes through an evening of art and alcohol – to coincide with the launch of Tate Britain's major new Van Gogh exhibition.

We know Van Gogh as an artist who enjoyed to drink, and even relied on it to ease his artistic process and torment. So, as our art historian tells the story of Van Gogh and his impressions of London, our drinks expert will have us tasting the drinks that were drunk in the bars and pubs he would have visited. We'll start with a nod to the bars of Paris by trying infamous absinthe, before moving to the backdrop of London where gin was the drink for the poor and working classes. We'll taste some variations of this 'filthy' drink as well as trying some beer, the drink encouraged by the authorities to lure folk away from gin, and also a rum punch, so favoured by characters in Dickens novels.

Vincent Van Gogh spent a short but incredibly influential time in London between 1873-76, a city he grew to love deeply during his time here. Opening in March, Tate Britain's major new exhibition will present the largest collection of Van Gogh's paintings in the UK for nearly a decade and it will explore how Van Gogh was inspired by British art, literature and culture, notably the novels of Charles Dickens.

Members are offered a 25% discount, at £33.75.

Please rsvp to events@lib-rary.com and liz@artscapesuk.com to claim a place.
